Chronic back and hip pain can manifest in many forms.  Some of the most common symptoms include localized tenderness and stiffness, radiating pain in the back, hip, groin or legs, decreased range of motion in the affected area, swelling or inflammation, and difficulty standing or sitting for long periods of time.

Causes of Chronic Back and Hip Pain

Chronic back and hip pain can have various causes, ranging from posture-related issues to medical conditions. Poor posture is one of the most common causes of chronic back and hip pain.  

The muscle imbalances related to postural misalignment can lead to:

  • Excess grinding in the joints
  • Increased pressure on the discs
  • Underperforming and overcompensating muscles

In other words, poor posture often leads to pain, mobility issues and damage to joints and soft tissues.  By realigning the posture and rebalancing the muscles, pain is relieved and the body has the space to regenerate and heal.

Sitting for long periods of time in an incorrect posture can also put excessive strain on the back and hip muscles. Medical conditions such as herniated discs, sciatica, stenosis, scoliosis, and arthritis can all lead to chronic pain in the back or hips.  But please know that those conditions do not have to include pain.  The healthier your posture, the more likely you are to prevent pain.

  • Stand/Sit Tall – Make sure your posture is tall and upright when sitting or standing, with your shoulders pulled back, chest out and core engaged.
  • Keep Your Feet Planted – Maintain a steady base with your feet flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart for optimal balance and posture.
  • Check Your Posture – Regularly check yourself in the mirror to make sure you’re maintaining good posture throughout the day.
  • Exercise Regularly – Incorporating exercises that improve posture and core strength, as well as stretching can help keep posture in check and reduce strain on the spine or hips.
  • Move Throughout Your Day – Make sure to move frequently throughout the day, taking regular breaks from sitting or standing to reset posture and keep it in check.
